Psychophysical evidence in support of the harmonic resonance theory can be found in a number of perceptual grouping phenomena.
Consider the phenomenon of collinear illusory contour formation, as seen in the Kanizsa figure. Neural network models have been proposed that operate by way of elongated receptive fields tuned to detect and fill-in a complete contour between detected edges which are in a collinear configuration. These "collinearity completion" cells must be replicated at every location across the visual field, and at every orientation at each location, as well as through a range of spatial scales, to fully account for the properties of collinear completion.
