The philosophical issue of the distinction between direct and indirect perception is vitally important in order to establish the paradigmatic foundations of vision science.
The insight of Indirect Perception leads to entirely different conclusions as to the nature of visual processing.
In particular, it highlights the generative or constructive aspect of perception identified by Gestalt theory.
The implications of this general approach to modeling perception extend to many other aspects of perception, including the perception of brightness, transparency, binocular disparity, motion, motor control and behavior, as well as others too numerous mention.
These issues are addressed however in my book, which is to appear soon
