The distinction between cognitive mechanisms, and "more complex mechanisms occuring later in the visual system" is a fine one indeed, especially when those mechanisms are not specified more precisely. Furthermore, if such higher level processes are presumed to occur in an abstract symbolic fashion, i.e. not in a low-level high resolution reified representation, then my critique of those types of explanation still applies, whether or not one uses the word "cognitive" to describe them. Nevertheless, I have changed the word "cognitive" in the new draft to "higher level" to address this objection.
