This influence is bi-directional. Forces from the external world are transfered into the internal model, and forces from within the model are transfered back out to the external body. For example if the ground pushes up on my foot and makes my leg flex, the model leg of my body image flexes in synchrony, as if the model leg were itself under the direct influence of that external force.
